WCS, in partnership with the Supreme People’s Prosecutor’s Office of Lao PDR, officially launched the Wildlife Crime Leadership Initiative (WCLI) in Luang Prabang.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Mr. Khamphet Somvorlachit, Deputy Head of the Supreme People’s Prosecutor’s Office.
The WCLI aims to strengthen leadership, practical skills, and cross-sector collaboration to enhance the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of wildlife crime in Lao PDR. The programme supports more effective implementation of national legislation and international commitments, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
In his opening remarks, Mr. Khamphet Somvorlachit stressed that effective leadership means taking proactive action rather than waiting for cases to occur, emphasizing that law enforcement agencies must stay ahead of wildlife criminals through stronger coordination, strategic investigations, and early intervention.
By developing a new generation of leaders and fostering cooperation among prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, and conservation partners, the WCLI will contribute to stronger wildlife protection, more effective criminal justice responses, and enhanced efforts to combat illegal wildlife trafficking in Lao PDR.
