Lao PDR Marks World Crocodile Day by Promoting Conservation of the Critically Endangered Siamese Crocodile

World Crocodile Day – 17 June

On World Crocodile Day, Lao PDR highlights the importance of protecting the Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis), one of the rarest crocodile species globally and an important component of the country’s natural heritage.

The remaining wild population in Lao PDR is found within the Xe Champhone Ramsar Site in Savannakhet Province. Recognized internationally under the Ramsar Convention, this wetland is one of the country’s most valuable freshwater ecosystems, supporting numerous threatened plants and animals in addition to the Siamese crocodile.

Conserving this species forms part of the broader commitment of Lao PDR to safeguard biodiversity and to implement international environmental agreements, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

National conservation efforts are being advanced through cooperation among government agencies, local communities, research institutions and conservation partners. Current activities include habitat management, scientific monitoring, ecological research, community engagement, environmental education and long-term protection of crocodile populations.

Healthy wetland ecosystems are essential not only for wildlife but also for people. They help regulate water flows, reduce flooding, improve water quality, support fisheries, strengthen climate resilience and provide sustainable livelihoods for surrounding communities. Conserving the Siamese crocodile therefore contributes to the protection of these wider ecosystem benefits.

Lao PDR remains committed to strengthening conservation measures for the Siamese crocodile and its habitat while promoting sustainable management of wetlands and enhancing public awareness of biodiversity conservation. These efforts support national conservation priorities and contribute to global initiatives to protect endangered species.
